A Sustainable Vision for the Future of Logistics
Since 2021, Interporto Bologna has been publishing its Sustainability Report, which replaced the former Social Report—previously issued for 17 consecutive editions—as tangible evidence of Interporto Bologna S.p.A.’s commitment to pursuing the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) defined by the United Nations through the 2030 Agenda.
Adopted on 25 September 2015 by the governments of the 193 United Nations Member States and approved by the United Nations General Assembly, the 2030 Agenda sets out 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). These goals form part of a broader action framework comprising 169 associated targets, to be achieved by 2030 across the environmental, economic, social and institutional dimensions of sustainable development.
Through its activities, Interporto Bologna focuses in particular on nine of the seventeen goals of the 2030 Agenda.
These goals guide the Company’s strategic choices and serve as a framework for defining ongoing objectives and areas for continuous improvement.
Positive Impacts on the Local Area
Key data emerging from the Company’s Sustainability Report highlight Interporto Bologna’s positive impact on the surrounding area:
- Over 40% of suppliers are local, strengthening the regional supply chain.
- 40% of the value generated is redistributed locally, fostering a virtuous cycle of economic growth within the operating territory.
With regard to environmental sustainability, feasibility studies have been carried out for the installation of new photovoltaic systems on currently underutilised areas—such as land plots and stormwater retention basins—as well as on building roofs, including warehouses, offices and parking canopies. These studies indicate an estimated total installed capacity of approximately 50MWh.
Part of the energy generated by these new systems will be used to power the gantry cranes planned for installation as part of the railway terminal expansion scheduled between late 2024 and spring 2025.
Together with the introduction of new 750‑metre‑long tracks—in line with European standards for the operation of longer freight trains and enabling a greater modal shift—these developments will further strengthen the Bologna freight village as an innovative and cutting‑edge logistics infrastructure, committed to the continuous improvement of its environmental and sustainability performance.
