The service frequency of trains connecting Bologna Interporto with the Cobelfret terminal in Zeebrugge increases from 4 to 6 couples of trains per week.
Since June 2023, the connection had already increased its frequency from 3 to 4 couples per week, and with this further increase, additional CO2 savings and road traffic relief will be ensured.
The train, operated by GTS Rail, started in 2019, allows northbound connections to the UK, Ireland and Nordic countries, and southbound connections to Greece and Turkey via Bari, carrying containers, swap bodies and semi-trailers.
"Intermodal freight transport is going through a particularly delicate phase at the European level with a decline in transported volumes that has particularly affected the rail sector. Despite this, we continue to work to make rail transport more efficient and attractive by taking advantage of the positive signals that the market offers such as the increase in trains to Zeebrugge. Shifting freight from road to rail by increasing more the synergy between the two modes of transport must be experienced as a common goal to achieve a more environmentally sustainable freight transport arrangement, which is already severely tested by pollution, and decongest traffic on the national road infrastructure. This is the mission we carry forward as Interporto Bologna and we count on developing further also thanks to the infrastructure investments we are undertaking," comments Giuseppe Dall'Asta, Director of Interporto Bologna SpA.
